Setting a Pench mark: A wild ride in Madhya Pradesh

It’s July, and under the cover of monsoon clouds, our car continues towards Kohka, a village on the forest periphery. The road cuts through the Pench National Park, close to the Turia gate near Khawasa village in Seoni District, Madhya Pradesh. After a three-hour drive, we reach the Kohka Wilderness Camp. Right behind it lies the Kohka lake, which sets the camp apart from the core forest area. Groves of bamboo and teak trees here create a haven for sunbirds and Asian Paradise flycatchers….

Life of tribals at Pench

FORMER BANKER ON A MISSION TO TURN AROUND THE LIFE OF TRIBALS

Every day we witness that our lives have always been encumbered and entangled in numbers. The highest percentage in school, the figures of GDP growth rate, the fall of the stock market or the millions who died in a year. Although seemingly logical by their outlook, numbers often reduce even the most genuine human lives and emotions to just a basic fact, leaving us vulnerable to the core. Constantly enamoured by this fact, Sanjay Nagar, a former banker, quit his comfortable city life and job to pursue his hobby of wildlife photography and set up a resort in

The Kohka Foundation empowers tribal communities living in and around the Pench Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh

Tribal communities in India have traditionally lived in close association with forests. However, what was once considered sustainable extraction of forest resources can no longer be viewed under the light of peaceful coexistence. Tribal dependence on forests is being increasingly seen as leading to forest degradation and depletion, and thereby continuing a vicious cycle of poverty and suffering……. Click Me! Click Me!

Wrapped up another fun trip. This time it was Kohka on the periphery of Pench tiger reserve. No, we didn’t spot a tiger, but we made lovely memories filled with laughter, scary tactics (Ankita Javle and I clearly scared the wildcats away), and authentic tribal food. @kohkawilderness spoilt us crazy with pumpkin and sesame papad, baigan bharta and moong vadi sabzi. I tasted mahua for the first time – with a pinch of salt, wedge of lime and a chilli it was potent to say the least. But the peg of the story is really something else, and I can’t wait to write it. We talk about how backward rural in India is, but there is a group of youngsters working toward changing that in this region of Madhya Pradesh. Watch this space for more. #kohka, you surprised me.

Go green, get in touch with yourself, try your luck at spotting the elusive big cats, enjoy the colors of the many birds, eat organic food, meet the potters, watch the farmers till the land, run after hens like the #roosters, pet the goats…in short live the happy, village life at #KohkaWildernessCamp, near #PenchTiger Resrve
Kohka Wilderness Camp is a secluded resort on the periphery of Pench forest where birds chirp incessantly, butterflies flirt around endlessly and insects add a dramatic background score. Such a drastic change from our city lives where traffic is the DJ of a party that never ends. Shourabh Ghosh Ankita Javle Ambica Gulati
